Happy holidays! Ready for summer? Believe it or not, while you’re snuggled up by the fire enjoying your hot cocoa and watching the snow fall, it’s the perfect time to start planning your summer RV camping trip.
If you’re dreaming of a summer vacation that’s worth a lifetime of memories, the time to start planning is now. Here’s our 6-step planning guide to make your RV getaway a success.
1) Decide Where You Want to Go
Haven’t decided yet? It’s not too late, but you should get started ASAP. The earlier you plan your summer RV trips, the easier it’ll be to find campgrounds you love and book popular activities. The most popular RV destinations are already getting booked.

2) Find Campgrounds—and Book Early!
You’ll be surprised how quickly campgrounds can fill up. If you’re going to stay near a popular vacation destination, it’ll be important to reserve your spot as soon as you can. A good rule of thumb is to secure your campsite six months to a year in advance.
Remember: holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day are the most popular times for summer RVing, so it will be very difficult to secure a campsite if you don’t reserve it as soon as possible. In general, you might have more luck finding sites if you plan to arrive on a weekday.
It’s important to do your homework before you make your reservation, because not all RV campgrounds are created equal. Here’s a few tips to consider when you’re choosing an RV campground.
3) Start Planning Your Activities
Depending on what your big summer RV dreams are, you may need to plan your activities even before you reserve your campsite. For example, the Grand Canyon mule rides can get completely booked as far as 13 months out, and some of their rafting excursions should be reserved even earlier. When you’re researching activities you want to do, be sure to find out if you need to reserve your spot, and how early you need to book it.
4) Make Trip Preparations
For the most part, your RV summer trip preparations won’t be much different from any other trip, but there are a few things to consider:
- If you’ll be gone for an extended RV trip, you may want to have your mail forwarded to you.
- Will you take your pet with you or hire a pet sitter? Dogs (and even cats) can be great companions on the road, but you’ll need to prepare ahead of time to make the trip a successful one.
- Figure out your food and supply needs. Depending on how many of you are going on your RV adventure and how long you’ll be camping, you may need to be strategic about how much you take with you.
5) Plan Your Route
If you’re a first-time RVer, it might seem silly to think about carefully planning your route, but every experienced RV owner has stories about someone who failed to consider their route. Low bridges, hairpin turns, high-grade inclines, and narrow back roads can make getting to your destination an adventure in itself!
We highly recommend using an RV GPS device to plan your route ahead of time. The TripMaker RVND 7710 GPS makes it incredibly easy. Routing directions include legal height and weight restrictions, and it includes handy tools like checklists, mileage calculations, and maintenance logs.
6) Pack and Load Up!
Especially if you’re new to RVing, start packing a couple days ahead of time. RVs have limited space and you’ll want to make the most of what you’ve got.
Follow this preparation plan for your summer RV trip and you’ll be sure to enjoy a camping adventure that’s loaded with memories for a lifetime. So, what are your big summer vacation plans? Don’t wait till it gets warm—start making them a reality today!
