About Big Bend National Park

Big Bend is tucked in a remote corner of southwest Texas an hour away from the closest town, and it bumps up against the Rio Grande for 118 miles. You’ll find three different ecosystems—Chihuahuan desert, Rio Grande’s flood plains and narrow canyons, and the Chisos Mountains—as well as 450+ species of birds and a wide variety of reptiles and mammals. Cretaceous and Cenozoic fossils are abundant too.

Big Bend is a stunning paradise for birders, photographers, backpackers, kayakers, explorers, and all-around lovers of beauty and nature.

Big Bend is home to more species of birds than any other national park in the United States. If you’re an avid birdwatcher, there’s no better place than this. The park is located along a migration route, so you’ll find northern species in the winter and tropical birds in the spring.

Ranger-led Programs

Get in on one of Big Bend’s many free ranger-led programs. You can sign up for a guided hike, evening program, talk, or workshop on Big Bend’s natural and cultural history. There’s a different program each week.

For a small fee, you can also take advantage of a personal guided ranger tour for families, groups, or individuals. These tours focus on a specialized topic or areas of the park.

Stargazing

Big Bend is one of the premier places in all of North America for stargazing—and it has the lowest light pollution of any national park in the contiguous 48 States. If the night sky is your passion, make Big Bend your very next destination.
