RV Kitchen Tips: Making The Most Of Your RV Kitchen

RV Kitchen Tips

For all the freedom an RV gives you to explore the country, your small RV kitchen can feel pretty restrictive at times. Newbies can get a bit frustrated with the challenges of organizing an RV kitchen, but veteran campers have found amazingly creative ways to make the most of their tiny spaces.

Like your camping trips, maximizing your RV kitchen is all about the journey, not the destination. Always be learning and keep your eye out to steal ideas from other RVers. Here are some of our RV kitchen tips to get you started.

Prioritize Your Kitchen Gear

You don’t need a lot of kitchen gear—just the right kitchen gear. That means you’ll need to keep it to the bare necessities, and find creative ways to maximize your RV’s kitchen space.

Priorities will vary for every RVer—maybe for you it’s a good set of knives, or a set of pots. Look at what you eat and how you prepare your food when you’re not on the road. Whatever you prioritize at home is what you’ll want most when you’re traveling.

Pack Light

Even if storage space weren’t an issue in your small RV kitchen, weight would be. The more you pack into your RV, the heavier it’ll be, and the less fuel economy you’ll get. You can lighten your load by finding lightweight kitchen accessories and packing items that you can use for multiple purposes. Maybe those storage containers would also make great mixing bowls. Consider taking plastic utensils instead of metal.

Creative Storage Solutions

Maximize your RV kitchen space by finding creative storage solutions. Here are a few ideas:

  • Install lightweight shelves in your cupboards to maximize your vertical storage space
  • Use magnets to secure kitchen items and containers to the refrigerator or underside of your cabinets
  • Store food such as cereal, baking ingredients, and other dry goods in square stackable containers
  • Install under-cabinet storage racks
  • Use lots of hanging storage units that you can hook onto the insides of closet doors and cupboards
  • Minimize food storage by only bringing what you’ll need. Purchase less food, more often while you’re on the road.
  • Get this fantastic 10-bottle spice rack
  • Use stacking and collapsible containers whenever possible

Secure Your Stuff

No matter how smooth the road, when you’re driving, your RV kitchen shifts, shakes, and bumps—which means loose items will go flying and crashing to the floor. Make sure everything is secure before you hit the road.

  • Use non-slip pads in your cupboards to help keep dishes and glasses in place
  • Secure your drawers and cupboards with latches
  • No room in the drawer? Hang small items on pegboards or hooks

Get Cookin’ with a Microwave Convection Oven

A microwave convection oven is a microwave and an oven in one. It’s incredibly compact and mounts under your cabinets, just like a microwave oven—but you can use it for both microwave-type reheating and traditional oven baking. All in a tiny little space!

Check out this video by Nikki Wynn that explains exactly how microwave convection ovens work.
