CHOOSING AN RV CAMPGROUND

Choosing an RV campground

You can’t understate how important it is to find a good RV campground. A campground can be the difference between an amazing experience your family will talk about for years, and a frustration-filled trip that your family will want to forget.

A well-planned campsite provides the right environment that sets the stage for good times and the ideal RV lifestyle.

Want to make sure you avoid the lemons? Here are our tips for choosing an RV campground.

Consider Your Physical Needs

Most important when you’re choosing an RV campground is to eliminate anything that doesn’t meet your physical needs. Your physical needs are your most basic needs, and if a campground doesn’t fit the bill here, you’ll have a lousy experience.

First, be sure to keep the size and requirements of your RV in mind. Will the available sites accommodate your 40-foot motorhome? If you need 50-amp service, will you be stuck with 30-amp?

Also think about your personal requirements. Do you have pets or kids? Do you have any physical needs that will need to be accommodated?

Know Your Personal Preferences

Next, know what’s important to you in choosing a campground. Here are a few items to consider:

  • Do you want to be surrounded by nature?
  • How close to town do you need to be?
  • How much privacy do you want?
  • Is WiFi a necessity?
  • What kinds of amenities do you want?
  • How important is community to you? Do you want to get to know your neighbors?
  • How important is location? Are you okay with being near a highway or airport?
  • Do you want utility hookups, or will you boondock?

Do Your Research

Once you know what you need and what you want from an RV campground, start your research and check each campground against your list. Make sure to be thorough—there’s nothing worse than getting locked into a situation you hate because you made an assumption.

You can tell a lot about a campground from its website. If it hasn’t been updated in years, that could be a bad sign—what else haven’t they been maintaining? Check for photos of the campground and the sites. Read online campground reviews. Check the cost, too!

After you’ve done your online research, check it out in person before committing. Drive through the campground and take notes:

  • Are the grounds maintained and clean?
  • Are staff available?
  • Does it look safe?
  • Do other campers take care of their RVs and sites?
  • Is it worth the money?
