Looking for a Christmas RV getaway that you’ll remember for years? Whether you’re escaping the snow or just escaping the daily grind, we’ve found five of the best RV destinations for your Christmas vacation.
Yosemite National Park, California
During the holidays, Yosemite’s familiar vistas are blanketed in a magical landscape of white snow and ice—an idyllic RV destination at Christmas. The Yosemite Valley becomes a pristine wilderness that appears untouched and unexplored. Winter is the quietest and slowest time of year at Yosemite. In fact, you may feel like you have it all to yourself.
For families looking for a playground of adventure, this is the place to be. Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area offers ski slopes and snowboarding, and Curry Village Ice Skating Rink is tucked in the majestic shadows of Half Dome and Glacier Point. Snowshoeing and ski trails take you exploring along wooded snowy trails with breathtaking vistas.
At Christmas, you won’t want to miss the Bracebridge Dinner—a Renaissance holiday tradition since 1927 that’s full of Christmas pageantry and festivities.
Stone Mountain, Georgia
Not a big fan of snow? Hop into your RV and head for some southern comfort at Stone Mountain Park, just outside of Atlanta. There you’ll find some terrific Christmas celebrations and activities for the whole family. Stone Mountain Christmas is the park’s month-and-a-half-long celebration, filled with magic and joy. You’ll enjoy live performances, see Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in a 4D theater, wander through the Wonderland Walkway, take in a nightly Christmas parade, and much more.
Christmas, Florida
Christmas, Florida, provides a fun break from the white stuff that families of all ages are sure to enjoy. Named for Fort Christmas, which was built in December of 1837, the town celebrates the holidays year-round. You’ll find a large Christmas tree at the corner of one intersection and Santa’s reindeer and sleigh on the rooftop of a building in the RV campground. There’s also plenty to do in and around the town, from the replica of the original fort to Jungle Adventure Nature Park. And Disney World, Universal Studios, and Legoland are just 20 miles away.
Portland/Mt. Hood, Oregon
Can’t get enough of snow and Christmas trees during the holidays? Then Oregon is the place for you! Known as the Christmas tree capital of the world, Oregon’s natural beauty is the perfect setting to enjoy blankets of snow perched on forests of evergreen boughs.
We recommend a week-long RV Christmas vacation at Mt. Hood. The Mt. Hood/Portland area boasts unbeatable opportunities for lovers of the outdoors—the Mount Hood Scenic Byway offers a breathtaking view that leads you around the mountain through valleys and thick fir forest. Be sure to visit historic Government Camp and take in a sleigh ride through the snow-covered streets. And as long as you’re near Portland, check out the Christmas Fantasy Trail, which lights up the night like magic with sparkling lights, music, and bonfires.
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is known as a huge summertime attraction, but during the holidays, its grandeur becomes more striking against the white blanket of snow and golden sunrises that winter brings.
Winter wildlife fans are treated to viewing opportunities you can’t get in the heat of summer. You’ll find animals that are more active in cooler temperatures—and without the summer haze and smog, you can see several more miles of stunning landscape at Christmas. Families should be sure to take in the Grand Canyon’s Polar Express, which takes visitors to the “North Pole” to meet Santa and his elves.
Winter weather at the Grand Canyon can vary wildly, so be sure to pack for all seasons. Visibility can also be unpredictable, so plan to stay for multiple days to be sure to catch a grand view of the Canyon.
NOTE: The North Rim of the Canyon is closed from Oct. 15 to May 15, but the South Rim is open year-round.
